For those who love science experiments, these Christmas science activities, such as a candy cane color-changing science experiment and fizzy holiday ornaments, provide endless opportunities for hands-on learning and fun.
Prepare to channel your inner scientist and create lasting holiday memories!
Peppermint Oobleck
One of our favorite Christmas science experiments is the Peppermint Oobleck. This activity teaches kids about non-Newtonian fluids using cornstarch, water, and peppermint extract. A non-Newtonian fluid doesn’t follow Newton’s law of viscosity, meaning its viscosity changes depending on the applied force. Oobleck, a mixture of cornstarch and water, demonstrates this property by behaving like a liquid when gentle pressure is applied and becoming solid when a strong force is applied, such as squeezing or hitting it.
To create your Peppermint Oobleck, combine 2 parts cornstarch with 1 part water and adjust the ratio to achieve the desired consistency. Add peppermint extract for fragrance based on personal preference. You’ll need a mixing bowl, a cake or brownie pan, corn starch, warm water, peppermint candies, and easy-grip tweezers to conduct the experiment.
The inclusion of peppermint extract stimulates multiple senses, rendering this activity both engaging and memorable for children.
Fizzy Holiday Ornaments
Fizzy Holiday Ornaments is another delightful Christmas science activity that explores acid-base reactions using baking soda, vinegar, and festive molds. The chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar produces carbon dioxide gas, water, and sodium acetate, with bubbles forming as evidence of the gas being produced.
To make your Fizzy Holiday Ornaments, choose exciting festive molds, such as novelty ice cube trays with tree or star shapes, Christmas cookie cutters, or silicone molds with Christmas-themed designs like angels or ornaments. This activity helps kids develop fine motor skills and color recognition while demonstrating a fascinating chemical reaction and allowing them to create their own unique Christmas tree ornaments or holiday decorations. You can even find a free printable template online to help with creating the ornaments.
Colorful Candy Cane Reactions
The Colorful Candy Cane Reactions experiment investigates how candy canes dissolve and change colors in different liquids, such as salt solution, sugar solution, and plain water. Temperature plays a significant role in this process, as the warmer the water, the faster the candy cane dissolves and releases its color.
When a candy cane is placed in warm water, its sugar coating dissolves, allowing the color to spread into the water. This captivating experiment allows kids to explore the fascinating world of chemical reactions and color mixing, providing a fun and educational experience during the holiday season.
