This book provides an interdisciplinary examination of the multiple meanings of "empowerment." Rather than seeking to define and critique this term, it draws out a range of different meanings, exploring diverse possibilities for action and engagement. In concise chapters, the book maps out a range of ways that people can be empowered along different continuums of power, moving from more familiar forms of teaching and counselling to less common and more radical strategies for fostering solidarity and civil resistance.

This introduction to the special issue briefly reviews the meaning and significance of the empowerment concept and problems associated with the proliferation of interest in empowerment. We identify some of the topics not included in this issue and relate those to the many broad and diverse areas of psychological empowerment theory and community-based research and intervention that are covered. We present synopses of each article along with some of the themes and lessons cutting across the frameworks, studies, and applications. These include a wide diversity of settings, fairly representative of empowerment interventions, and, at the same time, improved clarity (if not unanimity) of definitions and measurement, which has been a problem in much empowerment research and intervention.

In this manuscript we describe our “empowerment design” work. Instead of simply building an artifact to help an individual accomplish a particular task, the focus of empowerment design work is to develop socio-technical structures that empower individuals and societies more generally. Essentially, empowerment design is designing with heart. It is a complex work that involves bringing together multiple and even opposing agendas, acknowledging different voices, and even working through unintended consequences and confusing struggles that have no one clear answer. Here, we describe an empowerment design initiative that overtly attempts to transform a culture and empower those it serves by way of a technology-rich educational innovation called Quest Atlantis. While the project is currently situated in various informal and formal learning environments, much of the data in this account is focused on our collaboration with a local Boys and Girls Club that serves disadvantaged children. However, empowerment design requires going beyond the initial site of innovation, and therefore we also bring in data based on our work with teachers and additional sites so as to communicate the complete cycle of empowerment design.

Empowerment. The term empowerment has long been utilized by radical educators within critical education movements to refer to both the form of schooling and powerful outcomes for students. Ira Shor's (1992) " Empowering education: critical teaching for social change " serves as an iconic text in the field. And yet, empowerment is also a problematic word. Like many words in progressive or activist movements, it has been co-opted, even used to promote projects antithetical to justice. Srilatha Batliwala (2010) characterizes " empowerment " as a word that, despite its centrality to mid-to late-twentieth century social and political struggles of the Black power movement, feminism, popular education, labor rights, and liberation theology, has been " 'mainstreamed' in a manner that has virtually robbed it of its original meaning and strategic value " (p. 111). Women's empowerment, for example, can mean anything from working in solidarity with women to subvert oppressive policies and practices, to appropriating legacies of domination and patriarchy to use for one's own individual economic and political gain (think " lean in " here). The word, when used in anti-empowering contexts that promote individual gain over collective liberation, is not only cringeworthy but potentially dilutes its anti-oppressive meaning. Empowerment is contentious word because of the way it has been co-opted, yet by the same token, a word that is difficult to replace. Empowerment matters because it centralizes the role of power and draws attention to the inequitable distribution of power across political, economic, and social groups. Empowerment is not only about emancipation or liberation, which are words that conjure up images of a charismatic leader leading people to freedom. Empowerment is about ensuring that oppressed communities are equipped with the resources and knowledge to retain power and self-determination for their collective well-being, to maintain checks on imbalances of power. Empowerment is a process of " transforming the relations of power between individuals and social groups " (Batliwala, 2010).

Subaltern Linguistics and Practice challenges the goals and theoretical foundations of colonial linguistics, academia, and education and provides alternative approaches and practices. The goal of subaltern practice is to create economies, projects, and resources that can be made and used by community members and leaders to develop and promote community beneficial projects in their own language (or a language of their choice). In doing subaltern and CREDIBLE work, we need to develop a new array of tools and resources. This book provides a broad introduction for how this can be done along with examples of multiple CREDIBLE projects carried out by students and members of the broader community. The textbook is divided into four sections. In Section 1, we establish the need for this work, introduce some concepts that the CREDIBLE approach draws on and explain what we mean by CREDIBLE projects. In Section 2, we share what can be done when we adopt a CREDIBLE approach, including several examples of student projects across a range of areas such as education, environment, healthcare and economic development. Section 3 provides detailed guidelines and instructions on how to develop CREDIBLE projects with worksheets and activities that can be used to conceptualise, plan, and develop CREDIBLE projects. Finally, section 4 includes three CREDIBLE project reports as examples of how this work can be written up for wider dissemination.
