Find a scholarship
A scholarship or stipend could help you to cover the costs of your course and living expenses.
>> Return to How to apply
UTS offers a number of scholarships and funding schemes to support both domestic and international students undertaking research degrees. The schemes include living allowance stipends, tuition fee scholarships, conference funds and equity support grants.
Commencing 1 January 2024, living allowance stipends awarded to PhD and Masters by Research candidates are valued at $37,000 per annum. The living allowance stipend will match the Commonwealth Research Training Program base rate where this increases to over $37,000 p.a., and any increase will apply to new and ongoing awards.
- For PhD candidates, stipends may be awarded for a maximum duration of three years and six months (full time rate and duration).
- For Master by Research candidates, awards are for a maximum duration of two years (full time rate and duration).
Applications for scholarships are considered and awarded through a competitive process.

Domestic students
Note : To be automatically assessed for these scholarships, you must tick the box that says ‘I want to be considered for UTS Scholarships’ on your UTS online application form and indicate in the free text below which scholarships you wish to be considered for.
International students
Find out more about these scholarships with our Find a Scholarship tool.
UTS scholarships by application
For all other UTS scholarships, including faculty scholarships, you will need to apply using a separate application form. You can use the Find a Scholarship tool to see all centrally administered UTS scholarships, and you can also visit individual faculty webpages for additional opportunities:
- Graduate School of Health
- Engineering and IT
Note : You must meet the eligibility criteria and submit your application/s by the closing date/s in order to be considered.
External scholarships by application
UTS connects students to a range of externally funded scholarships . Each scholarship has specific criteria and closing dates set by the funder. Your application should be submitted to the funding organisation, not UTS.
RTP Fees Offset scholarships
The Research Training Program (RTP) Fees Offset scholarship is funded by the Australian Government. If your offer letter states that you have been awarded an RTP Fees Offset scholarship, you will receive the funding in the form of a fee waiver for the maximum period of time allowed for you to complete your research program, rather than as a lump sum in your bank account.
Who is eligible?
- Both PhD and Masters applicants from all faculties can apply
- Both domestic and international students are eligible.
How to apply
- The application is completed through UTS as long as it is received by the deadline and the applicant has ticked that they want to be considered for all competitive scholarships.
Impact on transferring students
- Your enrolment at your previous institution will be recorded and taken into consideration when determining your candidature duration at UTS. Overtime fees will be due if you do not submit by your work submission date.
For details of the RTP, please visit the Department of Education and Training .
Defer your scholarship
If you’re unable to start your research degree in the session your scholarship has been awarded, you may be able to defer your scholarship funding until the following session. It is unlikely that you will be able to delay until the next calendar year. Please check your scholarship Conditions of Award for deferment options, or email the Graduate Research School at [email protected] for advice
