Example question: 8Technology has made us lazy9. Do you agree with the statement given above?
SAMPLE OF A FULL ESSAY
Technology has made us lazy Mostly anything created around us revolved in a spectacular scale until sometimes we can get too overwhelmed with what technology has brought upon us. Advanced technology (the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes) has helped us in our daily life routines and it has also become a backbone in building our current society. Ideally, we are depending on technology and its benefits towards our lives. However, I disagree with the statement because technology has never made us lazy society. In fact, we use things related to technology to achieve our goals in life, to live in better surroundings and in addition, harmful diseases could be treated by medical technology invented by talented people.
It cannot be denied that technology helps most of us to achieve our dreams in life. Back in 19909s, we were happy to be able to use public phones to contact other people or enjoy watching evening drama series through television. As the technology has advanced, our young generations nowadays are lucky enough to enjoy their life just by having smart devices like smart phones, tablets or video game consoles. As a matter of fact, younger generations are not lazy because the world is actually in their hand; by one click at a time. Subsequently, technology eases our way to access to different channels that could help us to strive for the best. Photocopier machines, fax machines, printers and scanners are some of good inventions to help us in thriving in different walks of life. A group of students, workers or even housewives are fully utilizing different kinds of technologies to accomplish their dreams in life. They could be living their dreams either by working with big companies or using social sites to sell stuff online. Moreover, now that we have 8WIFI9 connection or 8data roaming9 to ease our jobs, sending emails, presenting reports or having a workshop online could be done easily by the help of technology. By far, technologies in communication has made us eager to be a part of our society. If humans are lazy, then those inventions of technology would not have been invented at the first place. Therefore, technology provides better things in life for us to achieve our goals in life.
In addition, new transportation technologies help us to live in better surroundings by enabling us to commute from one place to another. Apart from cars and buses, we now
have MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) and LRT (Light Rail Transit) whereby they were built from a combination of tram and metro features. We can use both MRT and LRT while we are travelling for work or sight-seeing in the city without any disturbance or being stuck in a congested road. Apart from that, our country is moving towards 8going green9 movement and that is the reason why there are quite a number of vehicles using natural gas (NGV) and electric cars roaming on the road. Our government wants to curb the air pollutions problems and with the help of new transportation technologies, we can actually live in a less polluted air. Hence, we are not lazy people actually because we live in a better place with good transportation technologies to help us to travel faster than before.
Apart from transportation, our government has provided us with beneficial medical technologies that can cure so many harmful diseases. Living in a fast pace world, we may forget to take care of our health. Most of the time, we simply eat what is in front of us or we seldom do exercises to maintain our ideal weight. However, with new technologies in medical field, many diseases involving our respiratory systems, kidney functions, brains or even skin related problems can actually be treated in this country. Moreover, our young generations are so eager to learn new things to be able to become doctors, dentists, pharmacist or even radiographers in order to help others in the future. Technologies do not lead us to laziness but they are motivating our young generations to strive for the best in life. Without technology to help us in medical field, the rate of mortality will be high and many people will die at a young age especially among new born babies. Thus, I believe that if people are lazy, they will not be able to invent more new technologies especially in medical field because we want to fight incurable diseases together.
In conclusion, I think we are using technologies at our best and it does not mean that we are lazy. They were invented and they were meant to be fully utilized in our daily live. In fact, technology is being utilized for achieving our goals, living in better surroundings and treat various harmful diseases. That is why I disagree with the statement because technology has never made us a lazy society. Without technology, might as well we live as a pre-historic society – living in a cave and hunting animals for food. As far as it concerns, the evolution of mankind has brought us many new technologies in our lives. For that, I think we deserve to enjoy every bit of technologies provided for us.
will not burn the calories but they will store the food as fat. Another healthy daily routine is doing exercises. However, stress will cause them not to indulge in healthy activities anymore as they prefer to sit on a couch while watching movies with potato chips in their hands. Watching movie can release their stress but too much of junk food will increase their chances of getting fat. On the contrary, some may choose to have irregular sleep pattern to forget their problem. Little that they know, it can lead to becoming fat too because their body is not burning enough energy to boost their metabolism. Therefore, disrupted daily healthy routines may cause weight problems among people.
Another negative impact of stress would be indulging in unhealthy lifestyles which can help them to gain extra kilograms. Overweight can be caused by eating a lot of instant food or fast food that can easily be acquired by using food delivery services. Lacking of sleep is already a hassle but to eat fast food like burgers, fries and soft drinks every time they stay up late to finish some work will surely cause obesity. Apart from that, alcoholic drinks or liquors can also be a reason to weight gaining issues. This is due to the sugar content in each drink which is not healthy to be consumed in a huge amount. However, people who indulge in alcoholic drinks will not stop their habits because they thought alcohol can ease themselves from all the negative stress that is torturing their mind. Thus, stress could actually make people fat by indulging in unhealthy lifestyles.
To summarize, a small number of people might lose weight due to excessive stress in life. However, there are many people who will gain weight because they could not do anything to fight against their dreadful situations in life. Stress had changed people habit of eating, disrupt their routines and lead to unhealthy lifestyle. For those reasons, I believe that stress do make people fat. To those kinds of people, eating and drinking activities can help them to overcome so many difficulties in life which resulting them to be obese due to the excessive food intake.
3) PROBLEM-SOLUTION ESSAY
Example question: You have heard most people said that the most important thing in life is health. Write an essay suggesting ways to stay healthy.
Health is wealth and for that reason, we must take a good care of ourselves. In order for us to enjoy life, we must start somewhere and take health issues seriously. Whether we like it or not, we are bound to grow old but it is not the reason for us not to take care of our health starting now. There are many plausible ways to stay healthy and make sure we keep our health in checked. Therefore, in order to stay healthy, we have to start by consuming nutritious food, exercising regularly and having a regular health check-up.
Living life healthily should start with what we eat daily. By consuming healthy food, we are on the right track to stay healthy. Take a lot of food which contains good carbohydrate and a lot of fibre like bananas or apples to ensure our body have sufficient energy to process in a day. Apart from that, do not forget to consume plenty of water in a day to help digesting the food as well as replenishing our energy for the day. Water is essential in our life to keep us going healthily. In addition, a healthy balanced diet by following the food pyramid will help us to lose some unwanted weight that might affect our daily routine too. With that stated, avoid food with high in sugar and salt like popcorn and crackers. We should avoid processed food like ready-made minced meat or chicken nugget whereby it might contain trans-fat which can increase the risk of heart disease. With that stated, eating right and drinking a good amount of water are critical to stay healthy.
On top of that, exercising regularly should be a part of our busy life. This is crucial for our well-being as we are busy working or studying, we tend to neglect the importance of exercises towards our physical and mental health. Regular exercises like jogging, walking and swimming release endorphins which help us to feel good for that day. When we feel good, we will feel happy and it helps us to boost energy for the whole week. Moreover, it only takes 30 minutes of our busy schedule to exercise. We can have regular exercises three times in a week because exercises help to reduce back pain and sore muscles after a long week of working or studying. If exercising seems too hassle to do it alone, we can ask our family members or close friends to do it together. Strolling in the park while talking to each other is another form of exercising too. While walking for at least 30 minutes, we can burn unnecessary calories as well as sharing problems with one another.

So with the new CEFR format, teachers and students will find it beneficial to see what I consider to be B4 and B5 samples.
For Task 1 (email or letter), the key is to respond to EVERY SENTENCE. It is a fallacy to just depend on greetings, 4 notes and a closing. My strongest advice is to teach your students to respond to every sentence as word count is not important anymore. Better to cover all bases rather than leave out some crucial info. The difference between B4 and B5, in my humble opinion, is the quality of grammar and vocabulary where B5 will have high accuracy, fluency and uses precise vocab, idiomatic expressions and even proverbs.
Anyway.. here are B4 and B5/5+ samples. The high band sample email is from my online tutee, based one 2022 Session 2 Writing Paper.

Subject: Setting Up An Online Business Is A Good Idea
I am glad to hear from you. Yes, I am doing fine and am as fit as a fiddle again although I have just recovered from a rather mild bout of Covid-19.
Undeniably, I am indeed crestfallen having to lose out on this golden opportunity to participate in the online business talk. I agree and concur with the statement that online business is more popular than the traditional way of doing business as it is so convenient. It certainly is the new trend and we certainly have to jump on the bandwagon to cater to more customers.
I am glad that you have the intention of setting up your online business after finishing your studies. I am of the opinion that you can sell your press-on nails online as I learned that you joined a series of press-on nail workshops during the last school holiday. Apart from that, you can try to sell baked goods given that you have just received a brand-new oven on your birthday. I am convinced that your products will sell like hotcakes online!
About joining you in setting up an online business, I am very sorry that I cannot commit as after finishing my studies, I plan to immediately backpack around Malaysia to gain priceless experience.
Buzz me again soon. Bye!
Task 2: Academic Essay
How do we get students to score in Task 2? Well, again, in my humble opinion, the easiest way is to write an argumentative essay. That is why in my Pelangi MuetMyWay book I sidestep discursive essays because even in an argumentative style essay, you can take a partially agree stance and explore it in a discursive way. The most important part of the essay is the introduction. A good intro must have
1. Hook (2-5 sentences using the various styles I focus on in my book: Facts/Stats, Narrative, Questions, Examples, Contrast, Imagination.. or use Proverbs/Quotes)
2. Stand (Agree/Disagree/Partially Agree)
3. Thesis statement (Agree/Disagree: Must list at least 2 very good points or safer to list 3, Partially: List the pros vs cons or just make a general statement that you will be looking into both sides of the coin)
There are many ways to expand an essay well as I explain exhaustively in my Pelangi MuetMyWay book. Here is a summary.
A) Intro, Agree1, Agree2, Agree3, Conclusion
B) Intro, Disagree1, Disagree2, Disagree3, conclusion
C) Intro, A1, A2, Disagree, Conclusion
D) Intro D1, D2, Agree, Conclusion
E) Intro, A1, A2, D1, D2, Conclusion
F) Intro, A1, D1, A2, D2, Conclusion
G) Intro, A1vsD1, A2vsD2, A3vsD3, Conclusion
For each body paragraph, there must be
1. Cohesive Device + Topic Sentence (First and foremost, the main reason is ..)
2. Reasons/Elaboration (This means that.. Moreover..
3. Concrete Examples (To illustrate, mention exact people/places/things/concepts to make the examples more concrete and easily imaginable.)
4. Mini conclusion (Thus/Hence.. tie up the topic sentence with the essay title keywords)
For a brilliant conclusion, tie up the 3 points with the topic again and end with a big bang of either 2 recommendations or 1 proverb/quote. Please refer to Pelangi MuetMyWay book for in depth discussion on this. I even have a substitution table for recommendations.
So what are my top tips? Your grammar accuracy and fluency shown thru your choice of vocab (more low frequency words used correctly) must be on point. Go and memorise beautiful phrases to replace expired phrases like 'I think' and 'For example'. I hv a whole section in my Pelangi MuetMyWay on Grammar and Wow Factor vocab.
Additionally, focus on the keywords in the question. Keep using the keywords to tie in the 3 points you have to either prove or disprove the statement. Use the keywords and their synonyms (Young people - youths/teens/young adults/younger generation/students/pupils, Gen X/Z etc.) If you just give definitions or explain factors without linking to the keywords in the topic, up will be considered off tangent and will have a hard time getting even Band 3. Conversely, I strongly advise you to NOT BE A SMART ALEC and use too much critical thinking in discussing your OBSCURE points as it is MUCH SAFER to stick to very OBVIOUS, MAINSTREAM IDEAS so that you cannot be considered out of topic. This last piece of advice is crucial. Also.. if you run out of time, stop at 2 points and immediately write the conclusion as 4 paragraph essays that with well explore ideas are accepted based on the 250 wordcount a d time constraint.
Okie, happy teaching. If you need personal tutoring as a student or teacher, write to me. [email protected]. I also run live/online seminars/workshops for schools and institutions.
Being enthusiastic towards our culture is often regarded as a top priority in Malaysia. Our government’s decision in making history a “must-pass” subject in SPM is a testimony to the belief that being insensitive towards our own culture can obliterate our own identity. Be that as it may, such a decision seems to have failed in producing Malaysians who show strong affection for the culture we have been practicing over the years. With regard to this narrative, I totally agree with the statement that the lack of appreciation for our culture has caused Malaysians to lose their true identity because most Malaysians no longer listen to traditional songs, find traditional clothing unattractive and many may not appreciate the celebration of traditional rituals.
First and foremost, Malaysians seem to evince little respect for traditional songs. This is evident with the decreasing number of traditional song listeners as most traditional songs are often associated with slow tempos, archaic melodies and boring lyrics. All these elements are out of step with the kinds of songs enjoyed by Malaysians today because modern songs are more energetic and natural. For instance, Chinese folk rhyme no longer appeals to most listeners as opposed to Korean pop songs that illustrate the hardships gone through by the current generation. The lyrics of the songs often portray outdated information such as the misperception surrounding riding pillion in our society, which used to be a romantic thing to do for couples in the past, but is no longer relevant in an era where cars are everywhere. Today, it is quite embarrassing if you do not own a car and everyone will look down on you, including girls. Eventually, traditional songs will disappear into the annals of time if Malaysians refuse to accord them with the recognition they deserve.
Secondly, most Malaysians choose not to dress in traditional attire out in public places. The demand for traditional clothes has been shrinking over the years. Many Malaysians will choose western clothing in preference to traditional attire because they can get the best bang for the buck for the former. For instance, men and women are in favour of casual attire such as T-shirts and pants on the grounds that these clothes are not bound by the kind of occasions they take part in. On the other hand, traditional clothes are only suitable for formal occasions and they cannot wear them arbitrarily as such behaviour may draw flak from their respective community. As the prices of traditional clothes are beyond reach for most buyers, most Malaysians choose to turn away from them. As a result, traditional clothes are losing their allure and it is just a matter of time before they are eventually extirpated from our lives.
Thirdly, Malaysians no longer show strong affection for traditional rituals. Many Malaysians are slowly picking up a behaviour where most traditional rituals are the products of superstitious individuals who only had a passing knowledge of the world they were living in. For instance, On Chinese New Year’s Eve, the Chinese will set off fireworks at 12.00 midnight to usher in the New Year. Unfortunately, this tradition is slowly disappearing today because, to most people, it is no longer a big deal. Most of them will go to bed prior to that, rather than staying up late at night to witness fireworks booming over their city at 12.00 midnight. One thing is for sure, many grand traditional rituals have been scaled down to modest affairs and the problem will probably deteriorate if we fail to galvanise Malaysians to make a real change to the way they treat traditional rituals.
To conclude, the lackadaisical attitude among Malaysians towards traditional songs, clothing and rituals shows that we are no longer in awe of our own culture. The lack of appreciation for culture can obliterate our identity as Malaysians. It is crucial to acknowledge to ourselves that the diverse culture is often dubbed a major attraction in our country and we are at a disadvantage if we choose to give up on something which we have already had.

MUET essay writing question one example
For the MUET writing test question one, you are required to create and write a reply to a letter or email. This will need to be at least 100 words long for the task and should make use of all of the information in the email or letter provided. Let’s take a closer look at an example:
Your classmate, Elliott, was unable to visit your English teacher who was injured because he was ill. Read the email from him asking about the visit that he had missed.
From: Elliott
Subject: How is Mrs. Alina doing?
How are you? How is Mrs.Alina doing since her injury? I am really sad that I could not join all of you to visit her as I was down with a fever and cough.
I heard that Mrs. Alina hurt he arm quite seriously. Am I right? How did it happen?
Please update me on her situation and when she will be back at school.
I hope I can visit her soon. Would you like to come with me then?
Write soon.
When approaching this task you can break down the email into distinct sections so that you can reply effectively. You can use the paragraph structure for this purpose. For example:
Let Elliott know how you are and explain what the current situation with Mrs. Alina is.
Describe what happened to Mrs. Alina and how severe the accident was.
Give an update on when Mrs. Alina will be returning to school.
Answer Eliott on whether you would like to accompany him on a visit to Mrs. Alina.
Here is a basic model answer reply for question one:
To: Elliott
RE: Update on Mrs. Alina
I am well thank you. I hope you are feeling better and recovered from your fever and cough. Mrs. Alina was in the emergency ward for a few hours and she was discharged on the same day. She has been home resting since.
Yes, you are right. Mrs. Alina injured her arm quite seriously. She was cooking in the kitchen when she slipped and fell. It was quite a bad fall and he husband had to take her to hospital.
She will be on best rest for about two weeks and should be back in school immediately after. She hopes not to be away for too long as our exams are drawing near.
Yes, most definitely, I will visit her with you, when you are ready. That would really cheer her up.
In the meantime, take care and see you soon.

MUET essay writing question two example
For the MUET writing test question two, you are required to write a short essay based on a statement or question that is provided. This should be 250 words or more and you need to be able to express an opinion, form an argument and provide justification. Your MUET essay should relate directly to the statement or question you have been asked, so make sure to stay on topic.
We can now turn our attention to the type of question you may come across for the MUET writing test part two.
You attended a talk by a youth speaker. During the talk, the speaker suggests that to reduce crime in the long term, courts should significantly reduce prison sentences and focus on education and community work to help criminals not re-offend. Prison is not a cure for crime
To what extent do you agree or disagree with the opinion?
Remember that for your MUET essay you should have an introduction, followed by three points each a paragraph long and then a conclusion. Let’s take a look at a possible introductory paragraph for this task.
Everyone thinks that reducing our crime rate is very important. Some people think that reducing prison sentences and replacing this with education and community work is a solution instead. On the other hand, there are those who believe that keeping prison sentences long is still the most suitable way to deal with crime. In my opinion, the method chosen would depend on the type and seriousness of the crime committed.
Ensure that when you are writing your subsequent paragraphs you make your point, give an explanation and then an example to back this up. Let’s look at a possible example:
Some think that an individual with a higher level of knowledge and education are less likely to commit a crime. It has been proven that crime occurs less often in countries with higher levels of education. In addition, community service is another great way of preventing reoffence. For example, in Singapore, when an offender is caught littering. They are sentenced to 100 hours of community service picking up litter.
Tips for MUET essay writing question two
Read the question carefully to see what type of essay you will write, discursive, argumentative or descriptive.

Make lists of vocabulary and words while studying so that you can use these effectively when writing.

How to write a muet discursive essay.
- March 12, 2022
A discursive essay is an opportunity for you to write about your personal opinion on certain topics. It involves you thinking about the subject matter being discussed and then presenting your balanced view on the subject. This would be your judgement based on your observation supported by evidence of the current happening around you.
In many sense writing a discursive essay is quite similar to writing an agree or disagree essay. But there are some differences.
Because of these overlapping similarities and differences I could understand that they may cause some worry.
However, I also believe that writing about a subject based on your personal views about a topic, is really something that you could enjoy.
As a teacher I feel that you can actually get over this worry of having to write an essay or anything else for that matter. One way to do this, is for you to understand the thing that you fear. Also understand why you feel that way.
Blog content
In this blog I’m going to show you how to write a discursive essay for the Malaysian University English Test (MUET) writing task 2. The content of this blog is as such:
Types of essays for writing task 2
What is a discursive essay, discursive essay sample question, content points for the essay, structure of a discursive essay.
- The introduction
The body paragraphs
The conclusion.
You will have 50 minutes for you to write an extended essay for writing task 2. The extended essay is going to be one of the following. They are either:
- A discursive essay
- An argumentative essay
- A problem-solution essay
The length of your essay has to be more than 250 words and the maximum marks you can get for task 2 is 60 marks.
In this blog we will be focussing on how to write a discursive essay. So, let’s first of all find out the answer to this very basic question.
These are the criteria that make up a discursive essay.
- In a discursive essay:
- the main idea is to explore the topic of discussion
- present both sides of the argument - for and against
- include discussion of the topic, present ideas and opinions
- there is no direct purpose to convince the reader to agree with your views
When you are writing a discursive essay your main idea is to explore the topic of discussion. And so because of this you are going to be presenting both sides of the arguments.
You are writing to inform. This basically means that you are giving the reader more information about the topic being discussed. Accordingly, you are going to write about content points where you support and also oppose to the topic.
Naturally, this will involve presenting your own ideas and opinions.
Also bear in mind that your purpose of writing is not to convince the reader to agree with your views. So, the way you write your essay will sound like you are presenting your ideas for the purpose of discussion only. You are not writing to influence the reader of your essay.
Let’s clarify this a little bit more by looking at the sample question.
This is a sample question of a discursive essay.
What is written in the red box is the task that you will need to fulfill for task 2. I would like to highlight here the wordings used in the task given.
In this task it clearly states that you will need to write an essay expressing your opinion on this statement. This is therefore a discursive essay.
Expressing your personal opinion is a must.
So use expressions like “It is in my belief that..” or ” I believe that..” in your elaborations. However, be sure not to overuse these.
Here again, it is evident that the question wants you to do this one thing which is to give your personal opinion on the statement. You can do this by presenting your views to support and to go against the statement mentioned.
In doing this you are giving an unbiased view of the subject matter. You are simply going to present from observation and based on evidence your view of the topic.
The statement made by the fresh graduate in this question is the topic of discussion of your discursive essay .
I will not go through this question here as I have already discussed and talked about this question in another blog. So, do click the link above to find out more about this question and the task that you need to fulfill in task 2 here.
So, once you get your question you are going to first of all, read and understand the topic given. After that, you are going to spend 5 minutes of your time on planning what to write. You will need to come up with three content points for this essay.
Let’s now look at the content points that you can use for this question.
These are the content points that you can have for your essay.
- CONTENTS TO SUPPORT
- Relates to job performance- devote time and effort
- Job satisfaction- happiness- quality of life
- CONTENTS TO OPPOSE
- Unemployment rate- not be too choosy- survival
- Job opportunity that pays well
Thes are the two content points to support the topic and two more to oppose.
The first content says that you do agree to the idea that a person’s career choice should be based on the person’s interest.
And the first thing you can say is that this will relate to the person’s job performance. People who have jobs that they love and are interested in, will devote their time and effort on the job.
The next reason you can give to support the statement is that choosing a career that you are interested in would provide you with job satisfaction. This will in turn contribute to your happiness and overall quality of life.
For the points opposing to the statement, you can have two of these points listed here. First you can say that you are aware of the current climate of unemployment in our society.
Unemployment rate is very high especially so now with the pandemic going on. You believe that we should not be too choosy in selecting only careers that we are interested in. This is because there is the need for you to have a job for survival.
Another reason you can give to oppose to the statement is if a person comes across a job opportunity that pays well, then certainly the person should consider taking the job. From these content points, select the best three that you want to discuss in your essay.
Now that you’ve got your content points, you can start writing your essay. Here is the structure of a discursive essay that you need to know.
This is the structure of a discursive essay . The number of paragraphs you need to have for your essay is 5 paragraphs.
- PARAGRAPH 1
Introduction
- PARAGRAPH 2
- Reason to support view in topic sentence 1 (TS1)
- PARAGRAPH 3
- Reason to support view in topic sentence 2 (TS2)
- PARAGRAPH 4
- Reason to oppose view in topic sentence 3 (TS3)
- PARAGRAPH 5
Start your essay with an introduction. The three content points would be made up of two points to support and the third content point would be one that goes against the statement. Lastly is the conclusion of your essay.
Let me just show you how this essay is written.
Let’s first of all look at how to write the introduction. These items are what you should have in your introduction.
- INTRODUCTION
- Background information of the topic
- Thesis statement
- State your stand (optional for a discursive essay)
Paragraph one will be your introductory paragraph. Start your introduction with a hook. A hook is something that is going to attract or pull in the reader to read your essay.
So, you’re going to write something interesting as the hook. After the hook you’re going to give some background information about the topic being discussed.
This background information will serve two purposes. One is that it will help the reader understand the topic more. And the second reason which is also the most important, is that it gives the reader confidence in your writing.
Giving some background information shows that you have some basic understanding of the topic.
It shows that you know what you are talking about.
You will need to write your thesis statement after that to let the reader know about what to expect in your essay.
And lastly is for you to state your stand. And for this particular question you will say that you agree to the statement made but only to a certain extent. Stating your stand for a discursive essay like this is optional, as really the main purpose of writing the essay is for you to give your unbiased view of the subject.
The next thing that comes after the introduction is the body paragraphs.
Content 1 and 2 support the statement
In a discursive essay content 1 and 2 show your support of the statement.
- Use linkers and sentence connectors (To begin with, Firstly, etc.)
- (TS 1) Reason to support view
- Explain your views with evidence and an example
- Closing for paragraph and reinstating TS 1
How you write your content point will be like this. Start your paragraph with a linker or a sentence connector. Examples of linkers and sentence connectors you can use to start your paragraph are such as, ‘to begin with, firstly, first and foremost’ etc.
After the linker and in the very first sentence of your paragraph you are going to write a reason that supports the view.
Next, you are going to explain this view with evidence. Provide an example to clarify this idea. Also explain more about the example and link it back to the topic being discussed. And then end your paragraph with a closing by reinstating topic sentence 1. Now let’s move on to your second content point in paragraph 3.
- Use linkers or sentence connectors (Furthermore, Moreover, In addition, etc.)
- (TS 2) Reason to support view
- Closing for paragraph and reinstating TS 2
For the next content point, again you would need to start with a sentence connector. But this time use the sentence connectors that signals the continuation of an idea. You can use ‘furthermore, moreover, in addition’ etc.
Right after this and in the very first sentence of the paragraph you would need to provide another reason for why you support the statement.
After this, explain your view with evidence. Add an example from what you have seen in the media for instance and then provide your personal opinion based on that. By doing this, again you are showing critical thinking of the subject matter.
After this, you will be writing your third content point.
Content 3 opposes the statement given
Going on to the third content point is where you are going to switch your view. Here, you are going to provide a reason to oppose the statement given.
- Use sequence connectors (On the other hand, in contrast, however etc.)
- (TS 3) Reason to oppose view
- Closing for paragraph and reinstating TS 3
First use sentence connectors that signal you are going to say something the opposite of what you have said before. It is very important for you to use a sentence connector that signals the contrast of what you have said. These are such as ‘nevertheless, however, etc.
Then, in the very first sentence of your paragraph, you would need to give a reason for why you oppose this view. Explain why you say this with evidence. Provide an example of what you have read in the newspapers as an example.
And moving on to the last paragraph which is the conclusion, you can write something like this.
This is the last paragraph for your essay.
- State the topic of discussion
- Summarise the content points
- Recap your opinion- giving a balanced view
- Closing for the essay
Start again with a sentence connector to signal the conclusion. Use ‘in conclusion or to conclude’ etc. to do this.
And after this, in the same sentence state the topic of discussion again to remind the reader of the topic being discussed.
Then summarise the three content points in your own words. You would need to rephrase the sentences that you have used before. Rephrasing your content points will avoid you from sounding repetitive and also will certainly freshen them up.
Next, remind the reader again of your stand regarding the topic being discussed. Give a recap of your opinion about the topic and provide a balanced view on the matter.
And lastly, provide your ending with a sentence that signals the closing of the paragraph. It should sound like you are closing your essay.
This is how you write a discursive essay. Look out for my other blogs about the other two types of extended essays that you may get for task 2 – the argumentative essay and the problem solution essay.
