How to Open a PowerPoint Presentation in Google Slides?
Did you receive a PowerPoint presentation, and now you have been asked to make edits to the PowerPoint slides within Google Slides? Why? It could be that you no longer have access to PowerPoint. It may also be that the program used to work with slides in your organization or educational institution is Google Slides, and you are expected to work within that program.
While PowerPoint is certainly the de facto standard for presentation slides, you may have umpteen reasons to work with Google Slides and also may need to open PowerPoint slides in Google’s presentation program to either view slides or to edit them. You may even have to save the slides in Google Slides’ native format and that’s something we will explore later on this page. Whatever your objective may be, you will first need to open your PowerPoint presentation in Google Slides as the first step.
Are Both Programs Similar?
The answer to that question is neither yes nor no. Answers may depend on your usage scenario, and beginner presentation users may find that Google Slides does have all the features they need. Also, while Google’s presentation program allows you to import PowerPoint presentations, it doesn’t support all features and effects of PowerPoint. In many ways, you will have to decide what works best for you.
In this article, we will look at three ways to open a PowerPoint presentation in Google Slides. These are the three methods we will explore:
- Open from Google Drive . This method copies a PowerPoint presentation to Google Drive and then, lets you open from there within Google Slides.
- Open within Google Slides . Launch Google Slides and open a PowerPoint presentation, even if it resides on your local computer.
- Open from Gmail . Open a PowerPoint presentation attached to an email within Gmail, which as you all know, is Google’s email program.
Method 1: Open from Google Drive
These steps will allow you to open a PowerPoint presentation in Google Slides using Google Drive.
- Open your web browser and sign in to any of your Google services such as your Gmail account. Next, click the Nine Dots button at the top-right, as shown highlighted in red within Figure 1 , below. Click the Drive icon in this menu.
- Doing so opens Google Drive in a new browser tab. Click on the New option, as shown highlighted in red in Figure 2 , below.
- Click on the File Upload option in the ensuing menu, as shown highlighted in red in Figure 3 , below.
Looks Different on Your Computer?
If the interface looks a little different on your computer than what you see within the screenshots on this page, there is no reason to worry.
First of all, you may be using a different browser or even a different operating system. Secondly, Google Drive, Gmail, or even Slides are not installed desktop applications like PowerPoint, and their interface may change more frequently. Even then, you may find that most options will work similarly to what you see on this page.
- This action will open a dialog box that allows you to choose a PowerPoint file for upload, as shown in Figure 4 , below.
- After browsing and selecting a file from your local computer, click the Open button, shown highlighted in red within Figure 4 , above. Doing so will upload the file directly to your Google Drive.
- Once your file is uploaded, you will see a notification in the bottom-right of your browser window, as shown in Figure 5 , below.
- Right-click on your uploaded file within to open a context menu. Next, you must bring up a submenu by choosing the Open with option. Select the Google Slides option from this submenu.
- Google Slides will open and launch your PowerPoint file, as shown in Figure 6 , below. Do note that you are warned about Google Slides not supporting all PowerPoint features, as shown highlighted in red within Figure 6 . Making edits could overwrite some PowerPoint file characteristics. You can see the file format being used for this file, as shown highlighted in green in Figure 6 .
- It is probably best that you do not alter the PowerPoint file at this point in time and save it as a Google Slides file. To save as a Google Slides file, choose the File | Save as Google Slides option, as shown highlighted in blue in Figure 6 , above. Doing so will ensure that you have saved versions of both your PowerPoint and Google Slides files.
Method 2: Launch Google Slides and open a PowerPoint presentation
This is a very simple method to open PowerPoint presentations straightaway within Google Slides:
- Open your web browser and access Google Slides by visiting the product page , as shown in Figure 7 , below. Make sure that you have signed in using the Google account you want to use.
- Locate the Recent presentations area, and click on the Open file picker icon, located at the rightmost of this area, as shown highlighted in red in Figure 7 , above.
- Doing so brings up the Open a file window with several tabs, as shown in Figure 8 , below.
- Options within these tabs are explained below:
- My Drive: If the PowerPoint presentation is within your Google Drive, you can choose this tab.
- Shared with Me: If PowerPoint presentations have been shared with your Google account, they will be located within this tab.
- Starred: If you have starred any presentations, those will show up in this tab, which makes it easy to quickly open a favorite presentation.
- Recent: Your recently opened presentations will show within this tab.
- Upload: You can use this tab to upload any local PowerPoint presentations from your computer.
- Whichever tab you choose, locate and select your presentation file. Then, click the Open button, as shown in Figure 9 , below. Do note that the Open button will be grayed out unless you select something to open.
- Clicking the Open button brings up the presentation slides in Google Slides. Again, you can continue editing the file as a PowerPoint file, or choose to save it as a Google Slides file, as explained in the preceding section.
Method 3: Open a PowerPoint Presentation from Gmail
Follow these steps when someone sends you a PowerPoint file as an attachment within Gmail:
- Within Gmail, open the email which contains the PowerPoint file attachment.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the email, and you can see the attached file, as shown in Figure 10 , below.
- Hover your cursor on the attachment, and you will find three options, as shown in Figure 11 , below. Click on the third option that says Edit with Google Slides , highlighted in red within Figure 11 .
- Google Slides will open the presentation in a new browser tab. Do note that in this case, the PPTX file will also be saved in your Google Drive. As with the other two methods previously explained on this page, you can continue editing the file as a PowerPoint file, or choose to save it as a Google Slides file using the process again already explained in the preceding sections.
Whichever of the three methods you choose, do remember that you can continue using the file as a PowerPoint PPTX file. We suggest you do not edit the PowerPoint PPTX file, and save it immediately as a Google Slides file so that you have native files in both file formats.

Opening a PowerPoint presentation in Google Slides can be a game-changer, especially if you're collaborating with a team that's spread across different locations. Whether you're transitioning into using Google’s suite of tools or you just need to tweak a few slides with a coworker, knowing how to open a PowerPoint in Google Slides is a handy skill. So, if you're staring at a PowerPoint file and wondering how to get it into Google Slides, you're in the right place.
In this article, we'll walk you through the steps to open your PowerPoint files in Google Slides with ease. We'll cover everything from uploading your files to making sure your formatting stays intact. By the end, you'll feel comfortable transforming those PowerPoint presentations into Google Slides, ready for collaboration and sharing.
Understanding the Basics of PowerPoint and Google Slides
Before diving into the step-by-step process, it's helpful to understand a bit about these two presentation tools. PowerPoint, a staple in the Microsoft Office suite, has been the go-to for creating presentations for decades. It's known for its robust features and wide range of templates, allowing users to build professional and engaging presentations.
On the flip side, Google Slides is part of Google's suite of productivity tools. It's a web-based application, which means you can access your presentations from any device with an internet connection. Google Slides is fantastic for collaboration, as it allows multiple people to work on a presentation simultaneously. Plus, it automatically saves your work to Google Drive, so you don’t have to worry about losing your progress.
Both tools have their strengths, and understanding these can help you make the most of each when you need to transition from one to the other. Google Slides' emphasis on collaboration and accessibility makes it an appealing choice for many. That said, moving a presentation from PowerPoint to Google Slides requires a few simple steps, which we’ll discuss next.
Uploading Your PowerPoint File to Google Drive
The first step to opening a PowerPoint in Google Slides is to upload your file to Google Drive. If you’re not familiar with Google Drive, think of it as a cloud storage service where you can store all kinds of files, including documents, spreadsheets, and of course, presentations. Here's how you can upload your PowerPoint file:
- Open your browser and go to Google Drive .
- Sign in with your Google account if you’re not already logged in.
- Click on the “+ New” button located on the left-hand side of your screen.
- Choose “File upload” from the dropdown menu.
- Navigate to the location on your computer where your PowerPoint file is stored and select it.
- Click “Open” to upload the file to Google Drive.
Once your file is uploaded, you’ll see it appear in your Google Drive. It’s important to note that Google Drive supports a wide range of file types, so whether your PowerPoint file is a .ppt or .pptx, you’ll be able to upload it without any issues.
Opening the PowerPoint File in Google Slides
Now that your PowerPoint file is safely uploaded to Google Drive, it’s time to open it in Google Slides. This step is straightforward, but there are a couple of ways to do it. Let’s go through them:
Method 1: Directly from Google Drive
- In Google Drive, find your uploaded PowerPoint file.
- Right-click on the file.
- Select “Open with” and then choose “Google Slides.”
Google Slides will automatically convert your PowerPoint file, and you’ll be able to view and edit it as a Google Slides presentation. Simple, right? This method is quick and efficient, especially if you have multiple files to convert.
Method 2: Importing from Google Slides
- Open Google Slides by going to Google Slides .
- Click on the folder icon (open file picker) near the top right corner.
- Go to the “Upload” tab and find your PowerPoint file.
- Once uploaded, it will automatically open in Google Slides.
This method is useful if you’re already working within Google Slides and want to bring in a new presentation. Either approach works, so you can choose the one that feels most comfortable for you.
Checking for Formatting and Style Changes
Once your PowerPoint presentation is open in Google Slides, it’s a good idea to glance through the slides to check for any formatting or style changes. While Google Slides does a great job with conversions, sometimes differences can appear due to the tools' unique features.
Here are a few things to watch out for:
- Fonts: Google Slides might substitute fonts that aren’t available in its library. If you notice this, you can adjust the font directly in Google Slides.
- Animations: Some animations in PowerPoint might not transfer perfectly, so check your animations and transitions.
- Images and Media: Ensure that all images, videos, and audio clips display and function correctly.
If you spot any discrepancies, you can manually adjust them within Google Slides. Remember, while this might seem like a hassle at first, it’s a small price to pay for the ease of collaboration that Google Slides offers.
Collaborating with Others in Google Slides
One of the standout features of Google Slides is its ability to facilitate collaboration. Once your presentation is in Google Slides, you can easily share it with colleagues, friends, or family members. Here’s how to share your presentation:
- Click the “Share” button in the upper right corner of the Google Slides window.
- Enter the email addresses of the people you want to share with.
- Set their permissions (view, comment, or edit).
- Click “Send.”
By sharing your presentation, you allow others to view or even edit the slides in real-time. This feature is incredibly useful for team projects, classroom settings, or any scenario where multiple inputs are needed. Plus, you can see changes as they happen, making the editing process more dynamic.
Using Google Slides Features to Enhance Your Presentation
Now that your PowerPoint is in Google Slides, you can take advantage of some unique Google Slides features to enhance your presentation. Here are a few features worth exploring:
- Insert Charts and Graphs: You can link Google Sheets data to create interactive charts and graphs that update automatically.
- Explore Tool: This nifty tool helps you find images and information directly from Google, without leaving your presentation.
- Comments and Suggest Edits: Collaborators can leave comments or suggest edits, making it easier to gather feedback.
- Add-Ons: Enhance functionality with add-ons that integrate directly into Google Slides, like Pear Deck for interactive presentations.
These features not only improve your presentation but also streamline the process of creating and editing slides, making your workflow more efficient.
Converting Back to PowerPoint if Needed
Sometimes, you might need to convert your Google Slides presentation back to PowerPoint. Fortunately, Google Slides makes this process straightforward. Here’s how you can do it:
- Open your presentation in Google Slides.
- Click on “File” in the top menu.
- Select “Download” and then choose “Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx).”
Your presentation will download as a PowerPoint file, ready for sharing or further editing in Microsoft PowerPoint. It’s a handy option if you need to present using tools that are more familiar to your audience.
Potential Challenges and How to Overcome Them
While the process of converting PowerPoint files to Google Slides is generally smooth, you might encounter a few challenges along the way. Let’s address some common issues and how to tackle them:
- File Size Limitations: Google Slides has a file size limit, so if your PowerPoint is particularly large, you may need to split it into smaller sections.
- Complex Animations: Certain complex animations might not transfer well. You may need to recreate these using Google Slides’ animation tools.
- Font Substitutions: As mentioned earlier, fonts not available in Google Slides might be substituted. Consider using widely available fonts to avoid this issue.
By being aware of these potential hiccups, you can prepare in advance, ensuring a smoother transition between PowerPoint and Google Slides.
Why Open PowerPoint Files in Google Slides?
You might be wondering why you’d want to open PowerPoint files in Google Slides in the first place. Well, there are several reasons why this could be beneficial:
- Accessibility: Google Slides is accessible from any device with an internet connection, allowing you to work on presentations from anywhere.
- Collaboration: As we’ve discussed, Google Slides shines in collaborative environments, making it ideal for team projects.
- Automatic Saving: Google Slides automatically saves your work to Google Drive, reducing the risk of data loss.
These advantages make Google Slides a compelling choice for many users, especially those who frequently work in teams or need to access their files on the go.

First, open your Google Drive. Near the top left of your Drive, click the New button.
You will get a dropdown menu when you click New. Select File Upload from the dropdown.
Select the PowerPoint file you want to open in Google Slides. (You can follow these same steps for other document types as well.)
Once you open the PowerPoint file, you will see a small box pop up in the bottom left of your Google Drive that will let you know when the file upload is complete.
Once the upload is complete, click on the file . You may see the message below as Google opens the file in Slides.
Then, your PowerPoint will open in Google Slides and you are ready to go!
You will want to check each slide to make sure no formatting errors occurred. Sometimes font sizes or types can come out slightly different when you upload the PowerPoint into Slides.
