Journal of Professional Issues in Engineering Education and Practice, 2010

The purpose of the methodology described in this paper is to highlight an effective method for the organization of research results into written and oral forms. Authorities within supervising universities have realized that strong research by a candidate is often obscured by poor presentation, leading to the paper being ignored by the research community and journal reviewers. On the basis of their academic background, the authors of this paper decided to form a set of clear guidelines for writing research papers and giving oral presentations aimed at helping PhD students. To support the effectiveness of the methodology proposed, a statistical analysis has been conducted. The methodology described in this paper was initially intended for use in the fields of computer engineering; however, it is applicable more widely. In conclusion, if the methodology reported in this paper is followed strictly, it is much less likely that a good piece of work would be rejected for publication, and/o...

Two of the most common mistakes made during the thousands and thousands of conference presentations held at conferences each year are: 1) the presenter forgets the purpose of the presentation (to inspire, communicate, get feedback and create a networks) and withdraws to a private party with his or her slides and presenter notes where the audience is essentially not needed. 2) The presenter makes the Cartesian divide between mind and body, and believes that body language, voice and interaction with the audience is unimportant when presenting scientific facts. This DUT Guide will take you through the six easy steps to better academic presentations.

The primary objective of seminar presentation is to enhance presentation skills when persuading, educating, or informing an audience. Specifically, it provides a focus on the fundamental aspects of a quality academic, professional and business communications including structure, preparation and strategy for delivery, using visual aids, and handling question and answer sessions. The presenter/student practices by preparing and delivering an ideal real-life academic/business presentation. Strict adherence to the instructions outlined allows the presenter to evaluate his/her progress and alter any distracting behaviours before and during presentation. It also enables the participant to learn by doing. The aim of this paper is to introduce students to simple principles on how to plan, writs and present their findings as technical conference papers, then act as the mini-conference programme committee members in reviewing each other's submissions. Finally, in addition to the model itself, description of some variations in instantiation and an assessment of the benefits of this general approach and recommendation for adoption by faculties and educators are proffered. Introduction Rarely are the three pillars of academia-research, teaching and service-addressed together, within one intellectually cohesive context in the graduate curriculum. Such a context is important for exposing students to the interrelationships among these facets. Oftentimes, people are confused what a seminar, workshop or conference means. They are sometimes considered to mean the same thing. However, workshop is a brief intensive educational programme for a relatively small group of people that focuses on techniques and skills in a particular field. Seminar on the other hand is a meeting of a group of advanced students studying under a professor/officer with each doing original research and all exchanging results of their findings through reports and discussions. A conference is a meeting of two or more persons/bodies organized for the benefit of discussing matters of common concern, which usually involves formal interchange of views.

Your confirmation document must be well-written and provide strong evidence that the outcome of your research is valuable to your field of study.

A successful confirmation document acts as a research proposal that convinces the University that you and your project are worth supporting.

For help with writing your confirmation document, read our general advice below or attend our Writing a confirmation document workshop .

What to include in your confirmation document

When writing your confirmation document, make sure you include the following:

  • a well thought out, explained and justified timeline and budget for your project
  • a list of skills you need to acquire to complete your research and how you will acquire them
  • the necessary ethical clearances if your research involves people or animals
  • a progress report of any results you’ve already achieved in your research (if applicable).

You'll also need to provide specific evidence that both you and your project are worth supporting.

Evidence that you're worth supporting

You should ensure that your confirmation document reflects your knowledge, diligence and dedication to your work. Start by including a high quality literature review that proves that you’re on top of the field and capable of pursuing your stated research goals. See our literature review guide for more information.

You should clearly review your research methods . It’s not enough to describe your proposed methods. You also need to justify and explain them. You need to prove that you’ve given your proposed approach careful thought.

Provide a well-written document . The quality of your work provides evidence that you have, or are well on the way to developing, written communication skills of a publishable standard. Since one of the expected outcomes of a research degree is the ability to communicate your work effectively, your communication skills will be assessed in your confirmation document and presentation.

Evidence that your project is worth supporting

Clearly outline your research hypothesis, questions and goals . While these should flow out of your literature review, you should also explicitly state them to make it clear what you're trying to achieve. Make sure your questions or goals aren’t too broad, vague or ambitious. It’s important to narrow your research topic down so you can pursue manageable and achievable goals.

Your document should explain and support your motivation for doing your research. This proves that you're doing something important, interesting and worthwhile. You may express this by explaining:

  • the size and costs of the problem you’re addressing
  • outlining any negative effects or a problem for a significant number of people
  • showing the cultural significance of your research
  • demonstrating disciplinary significance in terms of aiding progress in the field.

Provide convincing evidence that your project will make an original contribution to your research area. This is done by critically reviewing existing literature on your topic. Consider what is known and what can be improved. The gaps or problems you identify can provide a niche for you to make an original contribution.
