On 2/29/2024 i was on clinical observation at the franciscan, pediatric office. i’d definitely have to say i am not a pediatric, person, but this was by far my favorite observation of all time at, saint e. i followed karen she is an rn, she started out as an lpn, for quite a few years and moved to lafayette and received her, asn from ivy tech. she worked on the med/surg floor of, franciscan east for a couple years then landed at this pediatric, office. she was very informative with all her knowledge especially, on the test they do and vaccinations they give., almost all the patients we saw that day were sick except for 2, well child visits. i did get to witness a lead test which i haven’t, seen since my ma courses. we saw a 2-year-old that was very, distraught due to being ill showing symptoms of runny nose, very, fussy, screaming, but unable to advise non observational, symptoms. he was swabbed for rsv/covid/flu and was positive, for flu b. he still received his vaccinations due to him not having, a fever which i thought was strange because his immune system, would be run down. i asked about this, and karen stated that if, they are not running a temperature, they are ok to get their, vaccinations. the patient’s mother was advised to just treat the, symptoms with rotation of tylenol and ibuprofen, cool-mist, humidifier. this patient had been having symptoms for 4 days, so, it was out of the window to give tamiflu., this client i would say was experiencing infection due to the, viral infection of flu b diagnosis. immunity alteration because to, the viral infection. inflammation to the mucous membranes, especially in the nose and throat from it running and postnasal, i absolutely loved it here the staff was exceptional. all the, nurses were extremely friendly and gave lots of good advice for a, new grad. as a medical assistant already, i tried to help where i, could because they were short staffed, so i cleaned rooms so they, could move on to the next patient quickly and i roomed a few, patients by getting them from the waiting area and getting vitals., i wish i could have done more like help with vaccinations and, testing. the one thing that i thought they could have done, differently was test the patients prior to seeing the provider. once, you work in an office for so long you get to know what tests need.
